Freeholder Forge

About

Freeholder Forge, LLC is an independent software company in Chandler, Arizona. It is one engineer with 28 years of experience building simulation, scheduling, and decision-support systems for semiconductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Why it exists

Software people depend on has a tendency to get worse. Not usually through incompetence — through incentive. A product finds its users, the users become the asset, and the thing that was built to serve them is slowly turned to face the other way. Features move behind subscriptions. Files that were yours become files you rent access to. The interface fills with things designed to be clicked by mistake.

That process has a name now, and it is not inevitable. It is what happens when a company's obligations run to someone other than the person using the software.

Freeholder Forge is organized to avoid it. There are no investors expecting a return, no advertisers to serve, and no growth target that anyone's livelihood depends on. The software is paid for once, by the people who use it, and that is the whole of the business model. There is nobody else to please.

What that looks like in the code

It is easy to claim a principle and quietly undercut it. So here is one that cost something.

AOR's Gap Analysis tells you which albums your collection is missing, and offers a link to go buy one. An affiliate tag on that link would be free money, and it is the single most natural place in the product to put one. There is no affiliate tag, anywhere — and more importantly, the buy link is architecturally forbidden from influencing what Gap Analysis reports. The feature that finds holes in your collection cannot be paid to find more of them.

That is the test. Not whether a company says it is on your side, but whether it closed off the ways it could stop being.

The name

A freeholder owns land outright rather than renting it from someone who can raise the rent or change the terms. A forge is where durable goods get made, one at a time, by someone whose name is on the work. Both halves are the point.

What we make

The first product is AOR, a music collection stewardship application. More will follow; the company is not limited to music software.
